Jennifer Nginyaka Mitchell

Jennifer Nginyaka Mitchell (b.1955) Mitchell was born near Irrunytju at Kala Tjuti, an important cultural site for Wati Kutjara tjukurpa (Two Boys creation story). As a child Mitchell travelled across the APY and Ngaanyatjarra Lands with her family, and was near Maralinga when the atomic rocket testing was conducted in the 1950s. At the time her grandfather became ill and died from the radioactive impact. After her mother, Eileen Tjayanka Woods, a highly respected Irrunytju artist passed away, Mitchell became a senior custodian for Kuru Ala (Eyes wide open), a sacred site for Kungkarangkalpa (Seven Sisters) in the Spinfex Country of Western Australia. Mitchell lives in Blackstone Community and when visiting Irrunytju she paints with the Minyma Kutjara artists.
