Cynthia Burke
Cynthia Burke (b. 1973)
Cynthia Burke was born in Alice springs and belongs to the Ngaanyatjarra language and culture group. She is the daughter to well-known artist Jean Burke and spent her early childhood in Kaltukatjara (Docker River). She attended school in Warakurna and Irrunytju, then later boarded at CAPS Coolgardie and Esperance. Cynthia has family in Irrunytjyu and works across Minyma Kutjara Arts Project and Warakurna Artists where she has developed her own her distinct style and practice. Her paintings depict the country around Irrunytju and Warakurna and have a close relationship with the surrounding topography, helping to establish and maintain cultural connections to the landscape. Cynthia is also well known for her Punu (wood carving) artefacts and has a multi-disciplinary approach to her art practice resulting in highly dynamic artworks and contemporary interpretations of her Tjukurrpa and country.
